A team from IIT Roorkee developed a low-cost portable device called ‘Ladakh Oxygen Generator’ that can produce oxygen using solar energy. This device can help meet the oxygen demand during emergencies or disasters in Ladakh or other high-altitude regions.

A team from AIIMS Delhi developed a low-cost anaesthesia machine called ‘Ladakh Anaesthesia Machine’ that can use fertilizer products as anaesthetics. This machine can help reduce the cost and wastage of anaesthetics in remote areas where they are scarce or expensive.

A team from AIIMS Delhi developed a low-cost ventilator called ‘Ladakh Ventilator’ that can use bicycle pumps as ventilators. This device can help provide mechanical ventilation to patients who need it without requiring electricity or complex equipment.

While the metropolitan cities may boast of best-in-class healthcare facilities, semi-urban and rural areas have a different story to tell. As the pandemic gave a reality check, private companies along with government support are now focused towards taking a proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach. During the first wave of pandemic, only 18% of the treatment facilities had oxygen supported beds. The aim now is to equip the system to combat future crises with better infrastructure. Moving forward, CSR efforts would encompass increasing the bed capacity, providing equipment and deploying qualified trained staff in rural areas. Private companies’ involvement in ensuring Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by uplifting critical healthcare infrastructure to manage patient load is set to increase in the coming years.
